Tom van der Bruggen
Inventor of KAPLA
Dutch inventor Tom van der Bruggen wanted to build a scale model of a château. He developed thin, identical wooden planks for its intricate architectural details. His building project became the starting point for KAPLA.

The history of KAPLAThe year KAPLA began. Its name comes from the Dutch “Kabouter Plankjes”, meaning “gnome planks”.

KAPLA planks are made from pine grown in the Landes forests of south-west France. The natural planks are left untreated and unvarnished. Wood, a precise cut and your hands: enough to begin a new idea.

In every idea, I see the beginning of something bigger. A city that does not yet exist. A bridge between different ways of thinking. The moment someone discovers: I can do that too. With Centre KAPLA Hrvatska, I want to give that curiosity room to grow — and let people discover what their ideas can become when they work together.
My vision is for children to take their own ideas seriously, adults to rediscover the joy of experimenting, and generations to find a shared language through creating. It all starts with something we can hold in our hands. And it might take us further than we first imagined.
